History and Mission
The Centre for Serbian as a Foreign, Heritage, and Non-Mother Tongue was founded in 2013, at the initiative of the Department of Serbian Language (now the Department of Serbian Studies).
The need to establish such an organizational unit arose from the fact that a large number of foreign citizens gravitate towards Niš as a university and cultural centre.
Apart from that, there are numerous interested individuals who, due to various life needs and circumstances, want to learn Serbian and obtain a corresponding certificate of the acquired language skills.
As a matter of fact, the Department of Serbian Studies has been offering Serbian language assessments for foreign citizens ever since its establishment, by appointing its teachers and associates to offical commissions.
With the establishment of the Centre, both the Faculty of Philosophy in Niš and the city of Niš itself, quickly rose to prominence, as no such a centre had existed south of Belgrade until that point.
